You need to grow to quite a size before you’ll need to employ multiple beasts expert in all of the above elements. So, what do you do when you’re smaller? The “ultimate marketer” is simply a unicorn – they don’t exist. So what to do? Where does this leave SME’s?
In my view, the trick is to get someone who is energetic, and has some marketing qualifications – but also recognise that they can’t do it all themselves. There are experts out in the marketplace in all the areas you need – I think the core marketing competency you should bring in house is the ability to find the best providers in the market, engage and partner with them.
That’s the beauty of marketing – yes, this will cost more, but the results will be much better than you trying to do it all internally. You will get better results, which will bring in more sales.
